A new partnership project with Rotherham Federation and REMA (Rotherham Ethnic Minority Alliance).
The Ripple Effect is a four‑year project designed to bring people together, challenge division, and spark positive change across Rotherham. Through community leaders, myth‑busting conversations, and inclusive activities, we’re empowering residents to build stronger connections, celebrate differences, and shape a more confident, united borough.
With support from the National Lottery Community Fund, The Ripple Effect was developed as a flexible, innovative programme built on a test‑and‑learn approach. Rather than prescribing fixed activities, the project is designed to evolve, adapt, and respond to what communities tell us they need. Delivery began in October 2025, with a dedicated team across both organisations.
The Ripple Effect brings together a range of approaches to help people connect, understand one another, and feel confident in shaping the future of their neighbourhoods.
Upstanders Not Bystanders
At the heart of the project is our Upstanders Not Bystanders initiative. We identify and train residents to become community leaders—people who can:
- Challenge myths and misinformation
- Encourage open, honest conversations
- Bridge divides between groups
- Support others to take positive action
Bringing People Together
A major focus of the project is creating opportunities for meaningful connection. We will host inclusive events, shared activities, and structured conversations that help people explore challenging topics such as identity, migration, and belonging. Exercises like Walk a Mile in My Shoes encourage empathy and understanding by inviting participants to see the world from someone else’s perspective.
Community‑Led Learning
Education is another important strand of the project. Through workshops, talks, and peer‑led learning sessions, residents will gain a deeper understanding of different cultures, histories, and lived experiences. These sessions will be delivered by project staff, guest speakers, and trained volunteers.
Reaching Those Who Feel Disconnected
The Ripple Effect is committed to engaging people who may not usually get involved in community activity. We will work in areas that have been particularly affected by division—including Maltby, Dinnington, Eastwood, and Rotherham Town Centre—and reach out to residents who may have been directly or indirectly involved in the unrest. Our aim is to build a stronger sense of belonging and ensure that every voice is heard.
